Getting Bats Out of the Chimney
Bats like to find dark places to rest and to build their homes. Many assume bats will stay in caves, or around wooded areas, but do not realize that bats will inhabit homes, too.
If you currently have bats in your chimney, you know how big of a problem that is. To them, it is another dark and secluded place to create a home. To you, it is a nuisance – and a dangerous one, at that.
You cannot allow the bats to remain in your chimney. It is dangerous for you and them. Removing them immediately is a necessity, and it is something you can do.
Knowing When to Remove
Before you try any sort of removal or exclusion tactic, you want to know when to remove the bats. The time of year and day matter a lot with this.
At certain times of the year, the bats are going to have babies. When there is an entire colony in your chimney, babies and all, you do not want to risk touching them or leaving them there. If you remove the bats and keep them out while there are still babies, the babies will surely die. Without the ability to fly or move, or take care of themselves, they will waste away quickly.
Wait a few weeks if there are babies. It does not take long for them to get into flying and start finding their own lives.
Once you are ready, and you know there are no babies, do this during the night or evening. Wait until all of the bats have gone from the chimney to hunt before moving forward.
Exclusion Tactics
Removing and keeping out bats is all about exclusion. When they leave, you can use mesh to close up their entry points. When they try to come back, they will have no ability to do so.
You can use exclusion funnels, as well. This will allow any bats left inside to get out while keeping out bats on the outside.
Make sure you seal up every entry point when doing this. You do not want to give bats any opportunity to get back in.
Bats can cause a serious problem for you. When they decide to live in your chimney, know how to remove them quickly and correctly. Doing the job, and doing it right, is best for you, your home, and the bats themselves.
